Then, we considered the selection of available cuts and the variety of sides and accompaniments. Finally, we considered fine details like ambiance, reputation, and service. To break the inevitable close calls between each steakhouse, we applied the subjective yet important “Would We Take a First Date Here” test — a time-honored method for evaluating any potential gourmet dinner meal. After weighing all these factors, we came up with our list of the top 10 steakhouses in the United States, plus five that deserved honorable mentions. 

1. Peter Luger Steak House – Brooklyn, New York

The Breakdown: Peter Luger Steak House has been a staple in Brooklyn since its founding in 1887 as a cafe, bowling alley, and billiards hall. Peter Luger’s Steak House has a Michelin Star and is known for being one of the best steakhouses in New York and across the entire country.

Although the atmosphere is laid-back, the menu is more upscale than the traditional chain steakhouse. Appetizers include fried calamari, goat cheese and artichoke dip, and crab cakes, and side options include cremini mushrooms and lobster mac and cheese. As for steaks, choose everything from a cowboy ribeye to an 11-ounce filet to a massive 40-ounce porterhouse for two. Accompaniments like a half Maine lobster or a fried duck egg allow you to customize your meal to your liking.

10. CUT by Wolfgang Puck – Beverly Hills, California

As for steak, CUT has a selection of USDA Prime, Australian Wagyu, and Japanese A5 Wagyu beef, including shareables like a Wagyu tomahawk and porterhouse. In fact, Grey Ghost’s partnership with nearby farms and packing rooms allows it to source high-quality steaks from the Midwest to add to its kitchen, and it famously dry-ages its New York strip for 60 days before cooking and serving them to customers. 

St. Elmo Steak House – Indianapolis, Indiana

Founded in 1902, St. Elmo Steak House remains one of the most popular dining spots in Indianapolis. Its steak sauces and seasonings are so loved, in fact, that St. Elmo Steak House bottles and sells some of its top-sellers across the country, including its creamy horseradish sauce and root beer glaze. Its dry-aged USDA Prime choices include a ribeye, tomahawk ribeye, and New York strip, any of which you can order accompaniments for, like Chateaubriand sauce or horseradish gorgonzola butter. American Cut Tribeca – New York City, New York

However, this one certainly is up there with the best, thanks to its dry-aged options, like a 30-day dry-aged bone-in strip and a 28-day dry-aged porterhouse.
